Pictures of the new ambitious works at the Palmetum. 2010-2011 1 2

Dear friends, I have been away from the forum for a while. One of the main reasons is that I am overloaded with the new works started a few months ago at the Palmetum in Santa Cruz. Some very ambitious works have been contracted during last spring, for an amount of 5 million Euros. The goal is to open the park to the public next Spring. This botanical garden was started in 1996 but it has never been inaugurated. The works mostly consist of civil engineering and there is very little botany and gardening. However I am working along with the construction management team. I find surprising to see how this project is now running at such a pace, after a decade at very …

This double coconut is growing under glass with controlled environment. This coconut tree is one of the largest growing under glass. See the margins which are showing extensive browing. A new leaf is developing which also is showing marginal browning just like the old leaf. Please express your experience and thoughts as to how to rectify.

The trunk has a black wool type cover, with black spikes. Has enormous frawns that resemble a royals shape but much larger, each is around 25ft long and 5 ft wide. Frawns also spiral up trunk. At least a 1.5 ft diameter trunk with the black hair covered wood at least 15 ft tall. Sorry about no pics but I've never seen anything like it so if anyone has any thoughts let me know. Thanks

Wisconsin to Queensland

Wisconsin (Betula pendula) to Queensland planting Actually the B. pendula is from Europe, but it sure looks like the trees that grow all over Wisconsin. No offense to Wisconsin, I love Leinenkugel’s and a good brat, but the Birch had to go. I have been debating this one for a few years, chop down the birch tree or leave it up. The decision process took many months of beer drinking and thought, but finally a pro and cons list help make the decision Birch tree pros: Looks great when it "buds out" in the spring Provides shade in the hot summer sun Great compost and mulch from leaves Ladybug magnet Birch tree cons: Drops millions of tiny seeds that end up in…

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus or what?

I just had a look at the Kew Checklist and I see that Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is not listed as an accepted name. Is this an oversight ? If not, what are we calling the palm formerly known as Trachycarpus Wagnerianus? " O(+>"?

I'm planning on moving this small plant, it's too close to my driveway. I'm planning on digging around it when it warms up a bit, filling the trench with mulch, then moving it later on this year. Does anyone have experience moving this species? Any comments are appreciated!

Noticed a new spike coming on my zebra , very pleasing to see . Here is the newest leaf , starting to get a bit more complex . I think the recent posting from Hawaii is not an ophiopellis but a zebrina .. Though the more black and white one should really be zebrina

by Kris- 4 replies

Dear Friends i welcome you all to this palm repotting work, and the palm in discussion here is Livistona Saribus. Also commonly known as Taraw Palm. And this palm was raised from the fresh seeds sent to me by our forum member fiji jim. About 50 seeds were sent to me,And most of them had germinated. And these saplings were given away to like minded friends here.Only few were remaining with me which were desperately needing bigger sized pots to grow further. And these palms were staying in those plastic one litre mineral water bottles for around a year and half. And this time this palm maintenance work was shot in video form.you can see that video in the following pos…

Kinda like Murphy's Law.... After 10+ years of using off-the-shelf non-palm fertilizers for my potted Canary Island Date, Spindle, and Triangle Palms--with all going fine--last year I finally sprung for a palm special 12-4-12 fertilizer and had it delivered from across the continent. It has all the good stuff, including trace elements in chelated form, label sample at end of post. Last summer, gave my plants the new fertilizer twice, following label instructions of 1 oz. per gallon of water for container palms. In short order, two things appeared. First 2 photos show effect on the Spindle. CIDP shows it too, including frond frizzle. Triangle palms have frizzl…

A private Spanish garden

As some of you know, I was looking to sell my stock recently, as there is nobody on the premises here to look after my seedlings, hence it was to be the end of my business. All that changed the morning after the night I booked my flight to Peru, when I received a call from a woman called Isabel who lives near Malaga, one hour west along the coast. I met her briefly several weeks ago, when she came up to buy a few seedlings with her husband and children, and brought 5 members of the Spanish gardening forum, InfoJardin with her! Isabel offered to look after my stock and send plants out to customers. It naturally came about that we would both enjoy working as "socios", o…
