Ken Johnson Trip 1-28-11
by buccaneers37- 10 replies

Ken came by my house on Friday 1/28 to drop off some palms. It was a quite a juggling act to get my yapa off the truck since he had several other large palms to deliver else ware. The yapa was approximately 600lbs. which Ken helped me get in my back yard. The next day was a different story. It seems that, mysteriously, no one is ever around when there is heavy labor! ….So I did it myself. After digging a 4 ½’ x 3 ½’ x 2’ deep hole, I muscled the yapa over to the hole and eased it in, and believe me, it was ALL of 600lbs. I purposely dug the hole large so I would have some wiggle room with the palm as it will be growing (eventually) between some large Live oak branches. …

Last night before sundown I took photos of splashes of red in the shade garden - just because it was a beautiful day. Maybe spring is on the way. Chambeyronia macrocarpa View of frond from shade garden path Chamaedorea radicalis ripening fruit Areca vestiaria maroon. The Arecas took a hit in Dec. but I think they will survive.

Dypsis robusta
by PalmatierMeg- 12 replies
- 1.8k views
I have a young Dypsis robusta in a 7g pot. I know they get large. Over the weekend my husband tore an underperforming lemon tree from the northeastcorner of my shade garden. I'd like to plant my D.r. along the edge but I'm worried about subjecting it to FL summer sun. Can anyone tell me: 1. Does this palm tolerate full tropical sun at this age (or any age)? 2. How coldhardy is this palm? The last two winters have been harsh here - lows to 30ish a half dozen times, 28.5 in Jan. 2010. The palm will be exposed to winds from the north and northeast blowing across the vacant lots across the street and next door. 3. How fast does D.r. grow after it is planted?

This winter was the first time I used heavy, agricultural grade frost cloth to protect some palms for the entire winter instead of just throwing blankets over stuff as needed. As spring rapidly approaches I am wondering if I can just pull off the covers or if I need to re-acclimate the palms to full sun. There appears to be good light transmission through the frost cloth, but I am afraid of sunburn.

Palm Tree Suggestions?
by Palmlover- 35 replies
- 2.5k views
Hello, I been planning out my backyard project for the last two years. My intent is to build a Bali style backyard with a pool and lots of nice palm trees. I did buy and plant a few queens, kings, fishtail and pigmy palm in my backyard before the dig of the pool. Makes it easier to have them planted so I do not have to go around the hole to plant a big tree. I live in Huntington Beach, CA and get mostly part shade and sun in my backyard. I do have a good size yard to work with. Any suggestions which other palms will do well along with critique would be appreciated! I have my eyes on a red flame palm and maybe a teddy bear palm. I will post pictures as I progress with m…

Today was such a nice day, for doing nothing except pulling weeds and taking pictures of a screaming blue sky, and looking at my garden from the south . . . . The fan palm in the right foreground is a Brahea brandeegii. Silver palm in the left FG is a Chamaerops silver whatchacallit. A royal on the right, and another on the left. Those are the infamous Caryota urens of temporary glory in the background.

NEW PALMTALK CHAT FEATURE
by PALM MOD- 12 replies

After following up on a request from a member I discovered that Invision offers a fully supported add-on for real time Chat. It is now installed, give it a try. Click on the "Chat" tab at the top. It is a free add-on that supports only 5 in the chat room at one time. If it is popular, we can pay extra and provide for 20, 50, 100, 0r 200 at one time. I am not sure how it all works yet, so help me out. I have enabled it for everyone at this time. I have also enabled private chat, and off-line chat. These options may change as we figure it all out.

Exceptionally full-foliaged queen
by fastfeat- 3 replies
OK, second post today of good-looking individuals of mundane species... This fat young queen had more fronds than I'd maybe ever seen. (It was very windy when I shot these; probably even more impressive on a calm day.) This is what you get when you leave fronds on as long as possible (and maybe fertilize a bit...) Remember, God (or whoever) did not design palms with the ability to generate excess fronds just to give tree trimmers a career path...

PALMS IN NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA AND FIJI
by Phoenix Bob- 13 replies

Will be beginning a six week tour of New Zeland, Australia, and Fiji next month. Though our itinerary is fairly structured, would greatly appreciate any suggestions regarding those parks, botanical gardens, etc. that you might label "don, miss" and are easily accessIble to the public, especially on the North Island ofd N.Z., Sydney and Cairns. Am especially interested in tropical varieties as opposed to desert/cold hardy as we have plenty here in Phoenix. Thanks, PHOENIX BOB

Howdyall: You may recall I posted pics of a potted palm which resembled both a Dypsis pembana and a D. lanceolata. I don't think it's either. BUT! Maybe I'm wrong. Always learning. . . . . Here's the palm in question next to a D. pembana. The pemby is much lighter.

Areca latiloba twins
by PalmatierMeg- 5 replies

Last year I germinated a bunch of Areca latiloba seeds. On one of them I got two embryos germinating. They each have 2-3 little bifid leaves but I'm concerned that one of them looks a bit pale and peak-ed. I keep them in shade but bright light on my lanai. I haven't tried to separate them or disturb them in any way. 1. Is it common for Areca seeds to produce "twins"? 2. Can both of them be expected to survive if I give them optimum care? Centerpiece palm for 9b

Hi all, We just had a spot open up in the front of the gardens that I have been told we can put a palm in. It is in full sun but also exposed to the full brunt of frosts. Ideally the leaves should be cold and frost tolerant down to about 25 degrees. It needs to have a good sized canopy for blocking frost beneath it but also not be too dense of a crown. Any ideas? -Krishna

I've grown quite a few of this species in containers, and occasionally one will look like they will grow to be a shorter tree than the norm. This one though does seem like it might be a true dwarf. I just bumped it up to a 15 Gallon pot today. Perry

December 2010 at my place
by Walt- 2 followers

December 2010 was the coldest December in history (since official records have been kept) in terms of average temperature. For my place, I had more days (seven) below 30 degrees than in any month -- or even year -- at my place since moving here in 1997. My December lows (all radiational cooling events) are as shown below. Archbold Biological Station (ABS) located 8 miles south of me was even colder, and I've listed a few of those nights that dropped below 20 degrees. ABS's all-time low is 13 degrees. That translates to USDA zone 8a! Dec. 7th: 25.4 degrees (ABS recorded 19 degrees) Dec. 8th: 23.9 " (ABS recorded 18 degrees) Dec. 14th: 25.0 " Dec. 15th: 22.1 " (…

2 palms for ID
by PalmatierMeg- 22 replies
- 1.8k views
I'm considering planting these two handsome palms this spring but before I do I need to know what they are. They've gone through winter mostly unprotected, maybe with a sheet thrown over them on coldest nights. I believe at least one may be one of the Archos but which one? Oh, ignore the t-bird and 65 Mustang. Mystery Palm #1. It is a moderate grower with a "compact" as opposed to "drooping" look. The stem has a nice reddish blush. Top view Back of frond. Doesn't look silvery to me but my vision is pretty bad Stem showing reddish color

How much growth have you gotten this year?
by US_Marine- 2 replies

How much growth have you gotten so far this year? The cold over here in CA is slowing things down but it won't be long until it warms back up. My coconut palm is screaming for summer, already pushed up 1 frond and and is starting to push up a new spear thats 3-4 inches. My container is about to fall apart soon too, does anyone know where to find a very large container? I tried home depot but those ones are still too small. I might just use another trash can because I hope to plant this palm in the ground someday. Too bad they fall apart fast. This from a few weeks ago: This is the most current pic, when I have time I'll take more recent pics. Feel free t…
