Deaths and Goodbyes

It has been a quick year for me here on PalmTalk. Well actually, I sort of disappeared after school started, or the time it started to get colder. I have lost the extreme enthusiasm to take the time to care and serious love for my palms. I lost my needle to spear pull, otherwise known as fungus. Then again, I have to say I really didn't expect it to come through with flying colors. Don't get me wrong, I do still have a sincere awe for these plants. I think that since I had too many in my house I just... got tiresome of them. And when I did have them, I wanted more and more. I had to think logically, and thinking logically means I can't keep buying plants for the outside t…

Question about palms and cycads
by Patricia-CR- 3 replies

Beside palm lovers, I know there are many cycad fans here who might give me a hint, so the question is this (sorry for my ignorance ): If a palm or a cycad produces seeds, it's because the seeds are fertile? In theory, those seeds will produce palms or cycads? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, Some relatives of mine will be on a trip to Santa Barbara CA, and O'ahu (Waikiki) HI, at the end of May / beginning of June. Do you know some good places for collecting palm seeds, like parks (it's better for palm recognition when there's a little sign ext to the trunk ..) ? That would be great if you guys had some hot spots for getting a few seeds from unmissable lovely palmtrees  Later Chocapik

cloning palms: would you be interested?

Hi, I'm Andrei Konradi, and I'm a palm novice, but I'm also a biotech nerd. I've been reading about cloning palms, mostly oil palms and date palms. The techniques don't seem too difficult, and I think I could get access to the necessary equipment and reagents. Would any of you with unique palm specimens, maybe hybrids or special phenotypes, be interested in collaborating? Small leaf cuttings would be required. I have in mind an amateur, non-profit, for-fun project. I have attached a journal article which describes a cloning technique for Phoenix dactylifera. Best to all, Andrei W. Overhead watering question
by Hilo Jason- 17 replies
- 1.9k views
I currently have all of my planted palms on a drip system and am very happy with that. But I did install a run of sprinklers along my back fence that are mounted to the top of the fence so that I can cool the yard off on a warm summers day, and also add some humidity. Will this be bad for the palms and encourage rot? Also, a related question: I've noticed most all Palm nurseries that I visit have overhead watering in their greenhouses and shadehouses. How does this work for them and not people in their yards? I just built a small greenhouse (I call it a green closet since its so small) and I installed a few misting sprinklers at the very top and want to make sure…

defoliated but surviving Bismarckia nobilis near Ocala,FL
by Eric in Orlando- 9 replies
- 2.8k views
Yesterday I was going up I-75 and just on the southside of Ocala are these 2 larger Bismarckia nobilis growing along the interstate. I saw them a few years ago when they were first planted. They are growing at the entrance of a nursery that has since went belly up. I saw them last spring and they were completely burnt from the cold. Looks as if they grew a few leaves but were totally defoliated again this winter but they are putting out new growth. Temperatures were down to around 20F here maybe upper teens. Some Washingtonia robusta and Phoenix sylvestris around also had cold damage. Looks as if these Bismarckia get n care or irrigation now, totally growing on their o…

Hello there, I've received a pack of coquitos like these shown in the following image: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41NW...L500_AA280_.jpg Well, I was just wondering if the seeds are viable and should I try germinating them or are they good just for consumption?

This is my first post at the forum, so hello to everyone. I need some information about some caryota obtusa seeds i got last week. So last week i got 12 caruota obtusa seeds and i put them in a zip lock bag with some medium (perlite). Now, about a week later, i checked the bag and on three of the seeds has appeared this "thing" you can see in the photos. Its identical in all three of them. Is this the beggining of the germination? Isn't it too early? Do you thing its something bad that i should try to rip it of? if it is germination what should i do? Should i put the seeds back to the bag and wait more or should i plant them in a pot? Sorry if my questions are silly but i…

Clarification of Areca form needed

Hello. The following plant was sold to me as an Areca catechu dwarf but after further reading, I have my doubts. I've come across the term semi-dwarf, as well. I would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me some more on the differences between forms. The plant I have looks like this. Thanks in advance.

Palm for sand in SoCal
by dp92651- 6 replies
HI, Does anyone know a palm that can grow in pure sand on the beach (a ways from the shoreline to help with salt content) that is single trunk and will grow to support a hammock? I have seen a few but have not been able to determine what kind they are. I could make a large hole and fill with potting mix to get it started if that might help. Cheers.

Loose palm

Hi All, I have an almost trunking, eight foot kentia that is suddenly leaning a bit, from the ground and it seems that it is "loose at the roots." I have tied it up and it is still green, hardy and pushing out fronds. I think that it may have been hit by one of the blind, stupid deer in my neighborhood. Any suggestions? Thanks, David

Snails!
by Mandrew968- 2 replies

I have a lot of snails in my yard and I am concerned... I have the big, brown, round cuban snails and then I have the smaller spiral shelled snails. I know the cuban snails are very bad and I do my best to remove them, but what about the other kind? I see them all over my palms. Their shell is a mottled brownish with black and white. I know snails eat vegitative matter, but I believe these spiral shaped snails are native, and therefore, I am hesitant to dispatch them. Does anyone know if these are benign snails(to my Palms) or is there no such thing? I'm not one to kill, period

Brahea dulcis and decumbens
by tank- 12 replies

I'm trying both of these in my yard here in Gainesville, Fl. My soil is extremely sandy and well drained. I think there is a B. dulcis at Fairchild but I haven't heard much about decumbens here in Florida. Does anyone have any experience with growing either of these species in the south east, climate zones 9b or 8a? I have had some success with B. armata and am trying a B. clara out that I picked up this winter. I also have a B. nitida but it seems that it might get too cold here for it to survive long term. My lows the last two winters were 14F, and 20F. I have tried B. spp "super silver". These were plants that I grew from seed up to 3 gallon plants. They gre…

This Caryota "Himalayan" is growing in Winter Park on the grounds of the 1st United Methodist Church. I planted it in Aug. 2004 (a week before Hurricane Charley hit). It was a 1 gal. plant about 2ft tall when it was planted. Its grown well and very robust, only very minor cold damage the past 2 cold winters. The strap leaf plant behind it is a Pandanus furcatus.

Canary Island Date Palm - Different Kinds?
by honda03v6- 3 replies
- 1.9k views
I am trying to locate a palm tree that I see every day on my way to work. Without knowing the name of it is my first issue, but to me it looks like a large pineapple in the ground. I put in pineapple palm in a search and it comes up but certain "pineapple palm" pics that come up look different. It sits low to the ground and does not grow tall. I believe it might be called a Canary Island Date Palm but when I look up images online some of the pictures show it in the "pineapple" form with it low to the ground while others pictures show it extremely tall. Are there different kinds of these palms? I am looking for the one that sits low to the ground. Is there a specif…
