Brahea clara
by Al in Kona- 5 replies
- 1.2k views
Acquired this as a tiny strap-leaved seedling labeled Brahea clara and it has grown nicely to presently look like this (pictured below). It is growing on the leeward Kona coastal area near the Kona Airport. It's a low rainfall area but humidity levels never drop very low. Temperatures here are quite warm reaching into the high 80's most of the year. This Brahea was planted in ground from a 1-gallon size container about 2.5 years ago, so it has grown quite fast. In comparison, Brahea armata languishes in growth here. My Brahea armata was a good size 1-gallon when planted in my garden about 16 years ago and while it looks OK remains only a little over 1.22m (4 ft.) tal…

Livistona decora blooming for the first time

It was about 6' or 2 meters to the tip of the tallest frond when I planted it. It's now around 25' or 7.5 Meters to the top of the tallest frond. Last winter was quite cold here and it suffered some freeze damage on the older fronds so I removed most of them this spring. The night that really caused the damage featured temps of about 25F/-4C with winds of 25 mph/40 kph with gusts to 40 mph/65 kph. It was also bone dry and those conditions lasted for a very long time. This tree is very exposed to the cold, north winds. Prior year low temps were colder by a few degrees but they weren't accompanied by the high wind and this plant didn't have much discernable damage. O…

Anatomy of Palms
by Dave-Vero- 3 replies
- 1.1k views
Anatomy of Palms by P. Barry Tomlinson, James W. Horn and Jack B. Fisher is now available for about $190 from Amazon (US) or Book Depository (UK). This is obviously quite expensive for a 276-page book, even one full of color illustrations. I think many IPS members have met one or more of the authors and appreciate that they've spent enormous effort on the palm family. Back around 1970, Barry Tomlinson came up with the idea of making serial sections of a snall palm stem, making a photo of each section, then assembling the photos into a movie so that the vascular bundles and their xylem cells could be followed on the way up. There's been loads of work since then. …

How do I stop rabbits from damaging my young palms?
by sarasota alex- 1 follower

A couple of my very young palms have recently become victims of neighborhood rabbits. They seem to be going mostly after the petioles of bifid leaves. They eat the part between the bifid or sometimes pinnate part and the stem. So I get to discover a leafless stem with top portions of the leaves laying around. So far two victims are Archontophoenix myolensis and Chamaedorea microspadix (two stems). Any advise is appreciated!

cold winters changing landscaping decisions 1 2

From what I've seen, queens are selling like crazy here after this winter. I see very few cocos, adonidias are down, rarely being replaced in private homes, as are foxtails and royals. We still have large royals and foxtails around recovering, but replacements or new planting seem to be going the other way. It seems after few cold winters the average homeowner gives up on the warmer weather palms. I sense a shift in the public's buying apetite. When I look around at what my non palm nut neighbors are planting, its not royals, foxtails, adonidias, or spindles... I see phoenix, queens, a few bismarckias, sabals, whatever the box stores are offering in cold hardy type…

Groganic liquid palm fertilizer
by cencalpalmguy- 16 replies

Hey all. I bought a jug of this stuff from the distributer in San Diego a few years ago, but only used it occasionally when I had the time or remembered to. I didn't notice any great effects on my plants, but I didn't use it as directed either. Was thinking about getting more and using it in a hose end sprayer when I water my potted plants and palms but wanted some input before I spend the $85 (shipping included). Any thoughts? Chad

Dypsis cabadae
by Kumar- 1 follower

I have a Dypsis, identified last year on Palmtalk as cabadae. It has been a fast grower, sending out 4 fronds in 7 months. The petioles and midribs are pink, all the way up to the tips though the leaflets themselves open light green. It had started branching in February and the branching must be well developed by April-end when I next visit it. I would like to see some photos of this species - if anyone could share theirs' - preferably juvenile ones. I have seen a few adults in photos but they looked exactly like D. lutescens. This is mine. Is anyone growing Mauritia Carana? I cannot find any good photos on the internet of this palm and haven't ever seen one at any botanical gardens that I've been to. Someone said it looks just like a miniature M.flexuosa.. (Minature being a relative term). Any insight or even better - photos, would be greatly appreciated.

Security question, microchips
by Gtlevine- 30 replies

Hello everyone. In lieu of what happened to Randy with his stolen plants, and the fact that I have had cycads dug up and stolen in my yard, I am in the process of installing a security system to monitor my rare and expensive plants. My property is very large and I cannot get complete coverage, so I want to install micro chips in certain palms and cycads. Has anyone used microchips and can report how they work? Thanks, Gary

Yellow New Leaves - Butia
by JimStPete- 20 replies
- 2.4k views
I've been planting hardier palms recently because of colder winters we've had the past 4 years or so. I planted this yellowing Butia last spring (along with the Butia of similar size just to the left of it in this picture). It was NOT yellowing when I planted it. The yellowing appeared later last summer while the Butia's to the left and right of it stayed dark green and grew very well. The yellowing has not affected the growth, it's growing pretty well. The newest leaves are yellow when they first come out. They slowly turn green with age. Is this a problem or just a variation on how these palms grow? I thought it might be a fungus so I started putting fugus p…

Hey! I had a few hours to kill today, so decided to put this together. It's about 220 palm species I have photographed over the last two years. It's not very user-friendly, so if you want to get to a species, they're organized alphabetically, and if you put the curser over the thumbnail, the name of the palm will appear. Click here for it!
