I finally planted out my Hyophorbe verschaffeltii x lagenicaulis I got a few years ago that I have been growing in the greenhouse. This thing was a rocket in the greenhouse. It was one of my fastest palms. It was also amazing hardy to sun right out of the greenhouse. Its first leaf in full sun showed no damage. I planted this in spring and it really pushed three new leafs and really locked itself down. I put it next to my pool surrounded by concrete. I figured this would give protection. The coldest I have hit this winter is 39. Now this thing has no canopy as it really seems Hyophorbe likes sun here. So I am sure this is part of the reason the plant is looking like t…

Ah, the smell of Acephate in the morning
by DoomsDave- 1 reply

Howdyall: As some of you may have read from time to time, I've recommended acephate to kill those sucky insects that we love to hate so much, like thrips, scale, psyllid, etc. It turns out that acephate, which used to be the active ingredient in Ortho's infamous Orthene and Isotox bug killers has been banned in California. Acephate is the best bug killer; it kills almost everything on plants. It's a systemic that gets in the tissues, and smites 'em dead. Of course, you can't use it on something you want to eat, or feed to National Velvet, but, because the stuff smells so nasty, it's unlikely anyone would eat oversprayed lettuce anyway. (The smell is nasty; it …

Rhopalostylis confusion
by cfkingfish- 21 replies
- 1.6k views
As a Floridian, I have little experience with Rhopalostylis spp. but love the look of the palm. Which variety/species is the one supposed to do best in warmer/hotter climes? I feel like being a sadist and giving it a try.

Here is me with my favourite species of palm: the Jubaea. I have several Chilean wine palms in my garden, but I will never see them growing to such size, as this specimen is about 100 years old. You can find it in the park of Nervi (Genoa, Italy). Best regards, Stefano Barone

Office Coconut

My coworker has been growing this coconut in her office for two years. She started it from a germinating seed, which she brought to San Francisco from Hawaii. If the illustrated splotch on a lower leaf suggests any change in care, then she would like to know. Thanks! Andrei

Unusual Serenoa repens photos

I went to Matanzas Inlet just south of St. Augustine, FL, which is just south of Jacksonville, FL. XP Anyways, here are some photos of some Serenoa repens growing along the edge of the inlet. It looks like some of their roots have been exposed by erosion. I also have some other photos of the general area. These palms definitely have some atypical growth habits!

More Winter Protection Attempts
by AggiePalms- 14 replies

Here is my latest improvement in protecting my Caryota. I've had it six or so years, and protect it each winter. It isn't real happy, but comes back every summer relatively robust. My problem is now it is a good 16 feet to the top of the spear, and I can't reach it to protect it with my ladders. I am hoping this year won't be so nasty as to kill the growth apex, but we are expecting low 20's tonight. Anyway, normally I wrap it in R-13 fiberglass faced insulation. I have reused the same rolls of insulation for several years. It works. I decided to also wrap it this year in Christmas lights under the insulation. Here is the daytime view yesterday, showing insulation. No…

Palm ID
by Kumar- 8 replies
- 1.4k views
I have three palms, which in my records I have labelled as C. seifrizii and Adonida merilli (green). However the so-called green adonida looks nothing like the golden adonida and I was wondering whether there was a mix up or whether it was something else. Similarly the C. seifriziis don't look too similar to mature individuals I have seen in the nursery. These two were bought as C. seifrizzi And this one marked as the green adonida Meanwhile, these two volunteers remain un-identified, even after spouting a third leaf a piece Comment ?

Wild old Phoenix sylvestris
by Kumar- 7 replies
I saw this solitary P. sylvestris at a local bird sanctuary yesterday. It grows in what is a protected forest, very tropical with plenty of aggressive lianas and vines. Most of the young trees here get stifled by the vines so this fellow has done quite well for himself.

Kentiopsis Oliviformis
by sonoranfans- 16 replies

I already had 2 5-7 gallon kentiopsis oliviformis. They are nice palms... But last weekend I went down to visit Ken Johnsons place and saw some his palms, WOW!, they are bigger and look fantastic! Kens place is a stunner, its just packed with many species of palms. And from that visit, and my experience on the good cold tolerance this winter of Kentiopsis Oliviformis I decided I wanted some of those bigger ones in my yard. Besides Ken is offering a really great deal on big kentiopsis. So Ken came today and helped me place "my new favorite palm in my yard" . I actually bought 2, a 16 footer and a 12 that I havent unwrapped or planted yet. Here is the 16 footer pl…

Who is growing this in southern california? I hear the palm is hardy down to 25F, but I assume seedlings and youngsters are much less cold hardy. Can anyone comment on their growing experiences, and whether or not they know of a vendor for these wonderful trees..

Hello Guys, I need your expert opinion again. I took some pictures yesterday and was wondering what this palm was. I am without my encyclopedia so I can't check until next week. It has small purple to almost black round fruits. There were other livingstonias labeled Livingstonia Saribus and I was wondering if this was one. Laura

Another possible Dypsis

This palm was also shown in the Wilson Botanical Garden thread but I actually photographed it at a nursery down the road from the garden. I didn't see anything like this palm at Wilson, but the seed most likely came from them. The nursery owner did not know the name of it. Does it look familiar to anyone?

I posted some of these photos in the Travel Section but I'm afraid they got lost in the lengthy Wilson Botanical Garden thread. At the Garden there was a small grove of these palms growing just below the dining hall and the only info on the sign said "Dypsis sp. - Madagascar". Does anyone know what they are? They are tall attractive palms with a whitish crownshaft.

Coconuts in the jungle
by Kumar- 8 replies

Coconuts are never seen in the jungle, despite the heat and humidity, the shade, vines, animals and falling branches are usually showstoppers. I saw these yesterday, really old and quite tall. The first two photos (taken at 10x zoom) must be seen together to get an idea of just how tall they get. Here is the swollen base of one
