Ok, when do you start “top” fertilizing your palms after planting them? I’ve got the planting from the pot to the ground down. I use the 10 for 1 rule, and that is: a $10.00 hole for a $1.00 plant. I amend the hole according to the type of plant and the type requirements. For example, I always dig a much bigger hole than the pot, like for a 5 gallon pot I will dig a 3’ diameter by 3’ deep hole and add good top soil Metrical Grow Palm and Cactus soil with peat moss and compost soil. Around 3”- 5” from the top of the hole I will add NUTRICOTE™ Controlled Release Fertilizer around the root ball (not against it). So the problem I have is; how long after planting should I star…

Jubaea x Syagrus update 1 2
by Gtlevine- 60 replies

I am very fortunate to have obtained a Jubaea x Syagrus. It went from a strap leaf to fully pinnate in eight months, I am attaching a before and after photo. This is a very strange little plant, kind of looks like a compact Jubaea, totally different than all my other Jubaeas. I am very excited about the future of this plant and it will take a few years to get a feel for what it will ultimately become. Planted in March of this year. This photo is taken last month. Gary

Wandering in the garden today and my Areca's wanted their photos taken, so I obliged. I'm always amazed how colorful and varied this genus is, but at the same time have such similar traits you can always seem to identify them. Really nice palms for the garden. All still pretty much babies, but making good progress. A. catechu acquired as macrocarpa, but I thinks it's macrocaylx A. caliso with A. triandra directly behind

I have a large clump of Arenga hookeriana that is getting too large for it's spot. Do these palms transplant well? Its the rainy season so this is the best time to attempt this, but will these just die if I ball them out and transfer them?

seedlings to identify

Hi All, Recently I made a road trip around my usual plant and seed searching locations on Viti Levu and came up with these new palms. The persons that I traded with for these did know what they had and were not even sure where they got them. Most probably some seed that they picked up overseas somewhere. I saw that I do not have most of these in my collection so was very pleased to receive them. Now I would like to know what I have so any opinions would be appreciated. So here is the first one.

FIRST SPROUTS!!!!!! Cham. costaricana
by The Silent Seed- 6 replies

I've grown palms from seed, but that was a while ago - Just now, I discovered some new seedlings of Chamaedorea costaricana popping up - I'm so excited. It's weird, because these have been planted only about a month and a half, when I have Sabal seeds that are 3 months old, and no sprouts yet. Now, with these babies, I'd love to hear all you have to say about this particular species! Jude

I've seen this palm appear in a number of places, and it's beautiful. The pictures I have seen are of a heavy-trunked palm that is someone decipiens-esque. Any clue as to elevation at which seed was collected? My guess is up reasonably high, but I know nothing. Any comments appreciated! Jason

new coconut palm?
by cycadjungle- 5 replies
I must admit that I almost always go to the "other than palms" section to see what may being talked about on cycads, so I may have missed this being discussed here already. In Tampa, there is a local plant person on TV called "Mr. Green Thumb" and he was talking with a man from St. Pete this morning about some palms. The man showed a small palm that he said only 15 people had in the US. He said it was a palm that would produce coconuts and was cold hardy well into at least 28F, which at least was more cold tolerant than a regular coconut palm. He also called it the Madagascar coconut palm. I was wondering if this was just that somewhat new bismarkia type palm th…

I planted this for my son when he was born so that he can enjoy it! 1) I marked the spear 5 days ago just to see how it was pushing. Not too shabby - One inch. 2) Should I leave the heel exposed as it is or cover it? 3) Whats wrong with the spear at the tip and the base? Thanks!

Questions about palms in Italy
by Cindy Adair- 12 replies
- 1.3k views
So, I've never been to Europe and I leave next week for 10 days in Italy. My 14 year old son and I are with a school group headed by a Science teacher. We're starting in Rome and heading south to see as many volcanoes as possible. I have no control over most of the trip BUT still hope to see some European palms! We will visit a few gardens and may be able to have a free 1/2 day or so in Rome if anyone has suggestions. None of the other 18 people cares about palms so I could tell them the names or make something up and no one would argue (or care). Not much room to pack but a small palm guide so any suggestions as to likely species to see? Of course I'll probably take phot…

Palms that can take full sun + wet feet
by Ice Blue- 1 follower

Hello, I live just south of San Diego about 5-6 miles inland (border of zone 24) I have an area that I'm ready to plant out with palms. It is a lawn area so it gets plenty of water and basically all day full south facing sun. I'm looking for suggestions of plumose or pinnate palms that can take the full sun (without burning) AND lots of water (without rot problems due to lots of water.) I have found lots of palms that can take full sun but that will rot with wet feet. Conversely I have also found lots of palms that like lots of water but will fry with full sun. If anyone has had success with palms that can take both I'd love to hear. So far this is the list that …

When the Palm Trees Cry
by 353- 0 replies

This one is for all of us that have ever lost a palm. Parodies are meant to be funny I guess, but this one is pretty sad. This is a song that came to me all of a sudden just now and I had to write it down. I'm just starting out in growing and collecting palms, but I've loved them all my life. One of my first palms was a recently purchased Livistona nitida. I loved it as soon as I saw it! I named him Livingston. Unfortunately, since I was new, I made a repotting mistake and killed it in a manure mix "made especially for palms" from Miracle-Death. (I have a whole other thread on Livingston's quick demise.) Although I got another Livistona nitida, there will never be another…

Mystery Palm
by Tyrone- 11 replies

Hi everyone. Palm seedlings are notoriously difficult to identify. I have this seedling that came with some Prestoea acuminata var montana seed. None of the Prestoeas came up but this came up instead. You can see the seed that I think used to be connected to it by a remote germination means, but I moved it when taking the pic and it fell away and I couldn't see where the connection was, but it may have rotted away. This palm is at the point where it would have used the seed up. What Peurto Rican palm looks like this, or what palm at all. Any ideas. Best regards Tyrone

JULY, 2011 PSSC MEETING AT LORAN WHITLOCK'S PLACE

- 1.5k views
Howdyall: On Saturday, July 16, 2011, the Palm Society of Southern California will have its meeting at the home and garden of Loran Whitelock, in Eagle Rock, which is part of Los Angeles, California. I just learned of this, and will update with more details as they come together. Mr. Whitelock's garden is another one of those legends you hear about. He is the author of a seminal book, "The Cycads" and has had at least one species named after him. This is a garden people have come from all over the world to see, and now you can too! Admission is for PSSC members only, and their families. If your PSSC membership has expired, you can "re-up" at the door. If…

My usual walks take me down to the Sunset Cliffs area of Point Loma, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This particular morning I decided to head over to the other side of the point for a walk a long San Diego Bay. I'll try to get a palm in every picture, but most are the usual suspects. I parked on a side street at the far southern end of Rosecrans and took a stroll downhill toward Kellogg Beach. Ships! Right there at the end of the street, I wouldn't have thought the water would be deep enough. View down Kellogg Street...................
