Here are a few photos of my c. hooperiana. I wanted to know if there is a chance the seeds will be viable. It is the only chamaedorea hooperiana I have. Is it a palm that will produce seed on its own or does it need a male and female plant?

I have only one of this palm.It was growing very well ,not slow like I´ve heard on this board. Some time ago it began to form weird looking fronds, without or only with few not well formed leaflets. Then it stopped totally .I repotted the palm last week.... This was the look today. I decided to make a ´´surgery ´´removing the dead´´center where there is suposed to be a speer. Removed the weird young fronds.....Drenched it with água oxigenada 10% (peroxide) What do you think????

MIKe ("Mikey") Edwards from Cairns, Australia
by Phoenix Bob- 3 replies

When my wife and I visited Cairns, Australia last March, we had the pleasure and privilege of having Mike ("Mikey" ) Edwards give us a personal tour of Flecker Botanical Gardens. It was a fantastic experience made ten times better by Mikey's vast knowledge about any and all things palm. I was truly humbled by his expertise. Our tour of Flecker with Mikey turned out to be one of the true highlights of our entire tour of the S. Pacific. After returning to the States, we kept in regular contact with him, but unfortunately we have heard nothing from Mikey in more than two months. Personal and I.P.S. emails have gone unanswered as have letters sent by regular post. I ha…

wodyetia bifurcata casualty?
by Randy- 19 replies

My three foxtails were hit with a 1-2 punch last year, first they were "trimmed" by a former landscaper who felt compelled to do the typical overtrimming / hack job. They also trimmed back the canopy that I always allow to grow over the trio for additional cold protection. After firing them, of coarse we had our extended sub freezing temps last winter. I took the usual time xonsuming measures covering them and the rest of what I valued in our landscape. Two out of the three show new growth this summer, however my largest and fattest one has one very healthy deep green frond with partial burn from the freeze, and the same short spear that hasn't grown larger than about…

Ravenea rivularis is notorious for dying after a good drenching with the hose. What other palms can't get their "crowns" wet with municipal water? Specifically, Is Jubaea chilensis susceptible to this issue?

Howea forsteriana
by wimmie- 12 replies

Here in Holland, Howea forsteriana is often for sale as a houseplant. Mostly offered in a container with three or more plants. Once and a while, one of those plants has brown petioles. They also seem to be a little bit more elegant then the normal green ones. Does anyone know whether this is a named variety? Wim.

About 20 months ago I was given various palm seeds by a friend. The palm seedlings in photo (if I recall correctly) were marked Heterospathe elata. Based on the photo, can anybody here confirm if in fact these seedlings are H. elata? I know compared to a common queen palm, the growth rate of these seedlings is vary slow.

Palm hardiness ?
by The Silent Seed- 1 follower

I know this probably has been beaten to death - but what are the MOST cold hardy palms ? I was looking on Ebay to check for the remaining few Sabal species I do not yet own - and found an ad that says Sabal domingensis is hardy to 10 degrees ? Holy cow ! Is that true? If so, it has a fighting chance of surviving here in Massachusetts, with protection (hay, whatever) - So I'd love to hear about some other "freaks of nature" or other success stories that were unexpected. (By this, I'm not talking about a palm that gets leaf burn in 50 degree weather, haha!)

I haven't posted any pictures of my palms in a while, so i figured today was as good a day as any. These past 2 winters have taken a toll on many of my palms (since i was away at college and not able to protect them), but I made sure that someone protected the coconuts during the coldest of days, so damage was minimal. Overview of the palms. In the center is a trio of golden malayans, and in pots are 2 Jamaican talls and 1 Pacific tall. Here is one of my Jamaican talls. Carpenter ants invaded the base of it and were eating away at it slowly, so half of the base had been chewed off before I had gotten to it. The white dust is sevin dust, which i applied as well …

Sultry Summer Afternoon
by TikiRick- 28 replies

Thought I'd share a few shots of this wonderful, cloudy, humid August afternoon. A thunderstorm was brewing just to my west, and I could feel the cooler air being pushed downward. I love the heat, the humidity, the sweat,...and some outdoors too! For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere...I can only imagine....our August is your mid winter. Hang in there...spring is on the way! Summer clouds building. Back garden area. Some of the palms are now over the second story! My favorite spot beneath the Veitchias. My two passions are palms and crotons.

A number of my container ranch seedlings are just about bursting out of their pots and a nuber of them are under storey species so I decided to "sacrifice" one of the shade houses. THe netting provide the shade that these understories speceis need while the larger palms planted ta the periphery get some height. Notice the roots running in teh middle? Those are from the Red Jade vinre growing on the trellis nearby

Bridge project / viewing area completed
by Hilo Jason- 18 replies

A little over a year ago the Southern California Palm Society had the opportunity to visit the garden of Dr. Mardy Darian. It was an amazing day and besides the incredible plants, I was inspired by his cat walk bridges that he built throughout his property. Since I don't have huge Eucalyptus to work with, or a 3 acre lot, I have to make due with what I do have, which is a .2 acre lot and no canopy! Hah! It's not much, but it's now completed so I am happy. It's a 15 foot long bridge that connect my hot tub deck to the roof of my garage. The next step is building a deck on top of the garage roof so my wife and I can enjoy the sunsets on our new little perch. I …

Help with Dypsis/Chamaedorea tepejilote

Hi All, In my continuing rescue of things I'd forgotten I had, I found this D/C. tepejilote. It has been in the same pot for over 10 years and , well, kinda ignored. Trunk is small but OK: It is only carrying two leaves: Would it ever carry any more with a repot and some care? Before I assassinate this one, keep in mind I can't buy another one. Cheers, Adam

I really have not posted in a long while....but I have committed to be back. Where does time go? I have always thought about printing them onto large canvas pieces as art for my living room. But just have never gotten around to it. Here are some of my all time favorite shots of palms in color. All photos were taken in my garden. Which one do you like the best?

Kentiopsis number three
by sonoranfans- 16 replies

Last friday ken johnson made a trip up the west florida coast and dropped off a "not so little" kentiopsis oliviformis specimen. When Ken brings up one of his specimen palms, I am always excited to see how it looks unwrapped from the burlap he uses to protect the palm in transit. And this one didn't disappoint, I am enjoying it immensely. Ken and I managed to drag it the last 40 feet or so on a furniture dolly, and it gave me some appreciation for the size(16-17' overall) and heft. We dropped it in a hole I dug that was located midway between my other two kentiopsis that ken brought up last january. I staked it to stabilize it in a potential wind, and made sure it wa…

While taking some pics of palms in wires today, I came across this Phoenix that, at the rate it's rolling, won't have to be pruned for line clearance... It'll just pull down the comm cables, crush the Archontophoenix street trees beneath, plus a car and pedestrian or two... 600 block of N. Tustin for locals...

The penalties for palm fanciers

Is there one among us who hasnt at some stage tried to do something physically beyond their abilities or spent way too much time on a task that was somewhat strenuous ? I have been flicked in the eyes by fronds, cut by leaflet edges, stabbed by spines, tripped over roots and flattened by a heavy plant that fell over before I got the soil around it. Today I had to repot a few things from 350mm pots into 35litre bags, a job that a sensible person might take on, if they could manage one palm per day. Not I however, I had to attack with gusto and now I can barely move. Fortunately for what little remains of my vertebrae, I ran out of potting soil before I could attack the 3 m…
