Feeling Gravity's Pull...
by fastfeat- 5 replies

While taking some pics of palms in wires today, I came across this Phoenix that, at the rate it's rolling, won't have to be pruned for line clearance... It'll just pull down the comm cables, crush the Archontophoenix street trees beneath, plus a car and pedestrian or two... 600 block of N. Tustin for locals...

The penalties for palm fanciers
by peachy- 22 replies
- 1.1k views
Is there one among us who hasnt at some stage tried to do something physically beyond their abilities or spent way too much time on a task that was somewhat strenuous ? I have been flicked in the eyes by fronds, cut by leaflet edges, stabbed by spines, tripped over roots and flattened by a heavy plant that fell over before I got the soil around it. Today I had to repot a few things from 350mm pots into 35litre bags, a job that a sensible person might take on, if they could manage one palm per day. Not I however, I had to attack with gusto and now I can barely move. Fortunately for what little remains of my vertebrae, I ran out of potting soil before I could attack the 3 m…

Palm on fire
by Mark lasvegas- 8 replies
My dad accidentally set his med fan palm on fire when he was blowtorching some weeds. It is alive and well, but kinda looks really bad, like a giant charbroiled palm. I would like to clean up the trunk, and myself am an novice on palm care. How do I clean up the trunk to give it what I have heard called a 'cigar-smooth' trunk. I imagine I might need some special tools. Anyways, some advice on how to do it, and the right tools needed on how to clean up my charbroild palm would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Ptychospermas for my garden, outside
by DoomsDave- 13 replies
- 1.3k views
Howdyall, hitting the lists again, note a large number of Ptychospermas listed. I've grown the following, more or less okay: elegans(!!!), waitianum, burretianum, macarthuri, linaris(sp?). Anyone know about any of the others? They will mostly be grown under the shade of larger palms, unless they like the sun. Thanks for the input! DAVE

Help! I'm planting the side yard
by Peter Pacific- 2 replies
Hi everybody...as I mentioned in a previous post. I have to plant an area on the side of the house, an entrance into a guest suite. I need some ideas. I am trying to tie everything together and my thoughts are plant ferociously now and spend the next ten years thinning! Well, not really, but that's what usually happens. This is what I have so far and if anyone can chime in with some thoughts I will be forever grateful. This is the side garden which is seen from the entrance. Geiger tree, pony, small Euterpes, and island of Veitchias, a potted Syagrus x costae ready to be planted, and a couple of pembanas. Another view of the side yard whi…

palm survivors and victims of a falling tree
by Eric in Orlando- 7 replies
Back in early June an old Laurel Oak (Quercus laurifolia) split apart and fell during a severe storm. It was growing in a bed in the Palm Garden here at Leu Gardens. Laurel Oaks typically have a short lifespan (50-60 years) then develop heart rot and break apart easily. This tree provide shade and frost protection for some tender palms. A week later after the tree was cut up and removed, most of the palms under it had been crushed or taller ones had their fronds stripped off. Now in Aug. here is what is recovering. Many are cluster palms which are coming back from the roots. First, the victims...a small Parajubaea torallyi var. microcarpa which had grown fine but s…

Another Mystery Dypsis...
by BS Man about Palms- 31 replies

I was posting this to see if anyone (Hello Australia?) has a palm similar or? I bought this several years back as the name noted above from Gary Wood. The tag said it came from Pauleen Sullivan so I figured it was a no brainer to buy it. It has come out with a red leaf which I am 90% sure I took a picture of, but I have them in all sorts of file folders and am trying to find it. But for now, a pic from today. 5 gal pot. Searle. Its not a prestoniana, really.

Poll for toughest palm. 1 2
by cfkingfish- 64 replies
- 6.1k views
Here is the official poll. Remember to take in ALL these factors when deciding. With non-monotypic genera, I just lumped it into one choice. If we get a winner that has multiple species within the genus, I will run a second poll. -Cold/Heat -Salt -Wind -Flood/Drought -"Cool" weather -Soil types -Viral/fungus/other blights. -Root disturbance -Anything else you can think of.

Way cool houliou
by BS Man about Palms- 19 replies
- 1.9k views
While I wish the Bifid leaves stayed longer, the powder bluegreen of the Chambeyronia houliou is hard to beat. This just opened a week or so ago. The little bit of yellowing was I think from my unseasonal high temps before the leaf "hardened off".

Introduction and photos

Hello everyone, I've spent a bit of time in the chat room recently, but I figured it was time for me to post a few pics of my palms and tropicals and introduce myself. My name is Cody, and I'm located in the not so palm-friendly zone 5B of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Despite that, we have warm, humid summers that are perfect for quite a few palm and tropical species provided you have a plan for relocating plants indoors before the first freeze of fall. I'm looking to add to the collection, but as of now, I have a Ravenea Rivularis in a 10" pot that is doing great, with 3 new spears coming up: http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9372/photo2wm.jpg http://img268.imageshack.us…

Palm growth based on leaves?
by The Silent Seed- 7 replies
I know that down South (West, too??) sometimes Palms are defoliated to move them to new locations, or just to clean them up when they start looking ratty. I wonder, does this encourage faster growth? (I don't mean, of the new leaves, of course, but overall growth.) If a Palm was continually pruned back / defoliated, and the Palm was "forced" to put new flushes out more frequently, would a Palm actually grow faster, than if left alone? Sounds like a sinister experiment, though!

Butia Massacre - Adult Content!
by Adam from Oz- 13 replies
For our regular readers, let's just say I had a Butia capitata var. yuckensis that was not happy and had not been for many years - something to do with drainage, soil, possible pygmyism or bad Karma. Here it is blighting my front garden: Closeup of the beast. Every leaf would spot, yellow and not look like Butia capitata var. Was going to dig it up and replant it into a pot. But all was not well in the rootzone. There were unidentified borey looking grubs in the trunk: NEXT!
