Problem with my Chamaedorea elegans!
by Kostas- 9 replies
- 3.8k views
Hello, My Chamaedorea elegans which i have grown form seed for some years now,has suddenly developed necrotic patches in most of its leafs In some leafs, particularly the lower ones, the midrib became necrotic either whole or after a couple basal leaflets and as a result, everything past this point is shrinking and dying, first becoming purplish brown in color when looked from above or light brown when view from below against light. In other leafs, particularly the middle to lower ones, the necrosis takes the form of necrotic blotches at the terminal leaflets and tip necrosis of many leaflets but not in gradual or after blackening of the tissue as its the case when i see ove…

First optional palm removal in the yard
by Dave-Vero- 0 replies
I've had a couple of regrettable deaths in the yard from cold. Today's case was one of the three oldest palms in the yard, a Syagrus schizophylla, planted in spring 2004 with an Archontophoenix cunninghamiana and a baby Acoelorraphe wrightii. A few months after planting, the giant philodendrons in the area were smashed by a pair of hurricanes; a great opportunity to remove them. The revised bed got a giant bromeliad, an Archontophoenix tuckeri, a few normal-sized shrubs, and a tall Simpson stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans). Just beyond the bed, a pair of Satakentia liukiuensis, which I thought were going to die after this past winter's 26 degree freeze. Instead, they're …

Aiphanes horrida x minima

I bought this Palm from Pious Palms and planted it out in Aug 2008. It was in a 4" tall pot and about stood at 2' overall. Today it is now at about 15' overall with 1' of fatter (7" diam) then normal (for an Aiphanes) clear trunk. This palm was nearly unfazed by the 2010 freeze. It opens new leaves year round at about 1 every 1.5 to 2 months. Here it is just planted in Aug 2008: Here it is today, just 2 years later:

I've got a couple of potted Cyrtostachys renda that have been growing in full sun for a couple of months here in Escondido that are starting to show a few brown spots on their leaves. I'm a little concerned because in the past I've had Dypsis decipiens that got the same thing -- and slowly died.. Do I dare try chlorothalonil?

Parajubaea tvtvtvt EEEK! New developments!
by Adam from Oz- 14 replies

About three and a half weeks ago, I planted my P. tvtvtvt in a raised bed above my clay: For those who didn't read it - here's the planting box, the the P. tvtv, and the soil: Today I made a discovery. A 10 litre pot that I had filled with the same sandy loam was emptied out and I found that the soil had compacted LOTS over a week long period and was giving off a sulfur smell This suggests to me a lack of oxygen in the mix. So, I have to do something to adjust the mix - it needs to be coarser. My options are: 1. Completely replant. Remove it very carefully and then mix the sandy loam with some thick mulch or potting mix to give more "structure" to t…

Get Together??

Fellow Palm Talkers, While Ken Johnson was down on Friday, I gave him a little mini tour of my house. He mentioned that it might be a good place to have a get together. A lot of us Palm Talk members have communicated over the forum and this would be a perfect time to put a face to the names. This is all preliminary right now, but I was trying to gage what kind of interest there might be. I was thinking sometime in October, probably on a Saturday. I would do this on one of the three weekends the Bucs don't have a home game. I have a descent sized house with an attached game room with a foosball & pool table and a bar. I have a small palm /cycad collection; Nothing s…

Yesterday afternoon I made a quick stop at the Malama Market in Pahoa, our local mini-supermarket. To my unmitigated surprise I ran into Oscar Moreno. Oscar (ViveroLaVida here on PalmTalk) lives close to the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, and I have met him at the three most recent Biennials. He is a moderator in the Spanish Forum here on PalmTalk. Needless to say I don't normally run into him (actually, this was the first time! ) and I'm sure I was more surprised than he was. After all, he knew he was here. I didn't! He's here on a family vacation with his lovely wife and two young children. Despite this, he insisted on coming by at my new property this morni…

Supermarket coconut in the UK
by brattle_007- 20 replies

I would like to try germinating a de-husked coconut. According to many people they do work well. Problem is must places that sell coconuts in the UK are supermarkets. The UK supermarkets refrigerate them killing the embryo. It’s about 1 in 30 coconuts that been through the refrigerating process that germinates. I’ve been in Newcastle city centre to buy a few from the fruit market and found out they was unable to get them in all summer.

Hello, I'm really fascinated by the oddity of this palm with its reverse angled leaflets. But there's only scarce information about it in the internet and even here in this forum. Also almost no photos. Does anyone of you have this palm in his collection and can tell us more about it, maybe delight us with pictures? Does that someone maybe even have some seeds/seedlings available for me (only dreaming ) Regards, Oliver

Advice needed.
by drzoidberg1- 12 replies

I am having a problem with thrips on all my smaller palms...Chamaedoreas, Dypsis florencei, and Burrektiokentia and was wondering if any of the wise sages out in palmtalk land had any advice on which systemics have worked for you. I have tried spraying the leaves with water to eliminate the problem but now even the newly emerging fronds have them as soon as they start to open. They are all no bigger than 1 gallon size and i know it is not a matter of life and death for them, more for aesthetics but I would like to get rid of the problem. thanks!

I've been using carl pool palm fert and I know these love water so they are hosed down a few days a week. Historically the new spear opens a little yellow then greens in a week or 2 in the sun. Lately opening spears are staying yellow longer and now the tips are browning while still yellow. Is it the 30+ days of 100+F? Maybe too much water but dont they grow on the myola river banks in Australia? Maybe still recovering from being in the garage last winter with 16F temps? Or a micro deficiency?
