Arhontophoenix Seed Question
by mlovecan- 15 replies
- 1.5k views
My largest Archontophoenix ( possibly a Beatrice or else just a normal Alexander - the flowers are pure white ) has just pushed out it's very first seed bract. I read somewhere Archontos have 3 seed bracts ( I think it was one female and two males ) the one that is out now is male. As a lover of all thing Archo I am keen to have a pile of seeds ( ans many local Greek friends who never saw any of these palms until I moved to town would love to try growing some also ). Therefore I have a couple questions: 1) Is early September the normal time for flower production or can this occur at any time ( in other words is this too late and I should just look forward to nex…

Dypsis fibrosa

One of my favourite palms in the garden lately is Dypsis fibrosa. It just has a great appeal, with leaf form, new leaf colour and that great trunk fibre. It is a trouble free palm here, and seems well suited to our climate. How does it grow in your climate? Here's one of my smaller ones catching some light... Trunk fibre Daryl

does this idea for growing coco's in Cali have any merit ? 1 2
by trioderob- 53 replies

so here is the idea: you create a tall ring from oil drums filled with water. these oil drums are painted black to absorb heat during the day. this ring could be tall by placing several oil drums on top of each other. it could even be wide by using a double ring this would allow the roots to stay warm as the palm grew. you then would prepare the inside of this ring by spiralling a heater cable around the inner diameter of the oil drum ring. this could then be controlled by a thermostat and temp probe. coil would only heat up when temp were coldest at night in winter. extending upward from oil barrel ring would be 4 posts with eyebolts which could …

Some advice PLEASE
by Lowey- 9 replies

This is probably the wrong area to post this but anyway. My son wants to visit some freinds in the Good old USA in November and I might join him on his travels, I know it is not the best time of the year to be sight seeing for palms but was looking for some ideas on places to go, like Botanical gardens and so on. While I am posting thought I would add a couple of pics of the second new leaf on my Manicaria since the cyclone earlier this year and also the second new leaf on my small Verschaffeltia

I received seeds of this species and I have no experience with this genus. The palm is really stunning and I really want to have any success however small. The seeds are about dime sized in diameter and very hard. I soaked for 24 hours and planted in a Glad container with vermiculite. I took all the precautions as far as cleaning with a bleach solution both the seeds and the container. I may post a picture if I get a chance later in the week. Any help please?

Washingtonias Will Grow Well Anywhere!

I saw this picture perfect looking Washingtonia in the middle of a parking lot in Cape Coral, FL. How can this palm get any water or nutrients? No doubt the soil under it is pure builders special sand fill. Yet it still looks absolutely perfect and the trunk is almost as wide as the concrete border around it.

Fatal fungal disease attacks queens & Washies
by PalmatierMeg- 1 follower

Today in the paper I read about the latest fungal wilt disease that seems to attack queens & Washies. It has now been found in my county and across the river from Cape Coral. It is 100% fatal and kills so quickly the palm is dead almost before you realize it is sick. The article states that while people in southern FL will cheer the demise of such "weedy" palms, in north FL where palm choices are much more limited, gardeners are not amused. This is a different wilt from the one that came from TX a couple years ago. So far, the disease is confined to FL but how long will that last? Has anyone else come across this latest palm plague? http://www.news-press.com/articl…

I was sorting through some photos & came across these of my Kentiopsis oliviformis originally planted as a 7 gallon in April 2008. The second pic is from July 2009 & the third July 2010. The last pic is from this morning (Sept 2011). Once Kentiopsis start trunking, they really took off. -Randy

Progress of my Bizzies and other palms in Mt Dora
by mike-coral gables- 15 replies

It has been about a year since I last posted my Bizzies and other palms on my lakefront property in Mt Dora. Although we have had a couple of brutal past winters everything is doing great and is thriving. I know you guys are going to say that everything is planted too close but I intend to relocate/transplant them once I build my home. They are planted on the perimeter of my lot and will be used in my permanent landscape plan. The Raveneas and were Roystoneas were planted this past March and have not been through a winter in Z 9B. I am not worried about the Raveneas but the Roystoneas are TBD! Hopefully the warmth of the lake will keep them alive. I have 5 Beccariophoen…

Planting a Jubaea... 1 2

Today I planted a Jubaea that I germinated and was growing in a pot for +-5 years. I had two helpers! (Leonard and Lydia) Here you can see a shot of two young Jubaeas of the same age. The palm in the ground was planted after one year in a pot. A big difference in growth. I don´t know the normal growth of a Jubaea.... I only know they are slow Is this normal for a 5 yo Jub in the ground? PS on the 2nd shot you can also see a Butia x Jubaea F2 of the same age (a lot faster!),that shows a beautyfull gray-blue collor

Good morning all, Spring has done its springing routine here in the Land of Oz and a young man's thoughts turn to neighbour lust. Around the corner from Chez Adam grows this scrumptious, deelish hybrid of a Phoenix: WOOF! Grrrrrrrrrrrr.................... Look at that lovely list, the full crowning glory. It looks all coconutty. Of course, as it is healthy and handsome, it is being grown by a Palm Moron (for those who don't remember, Palm morons are those who know negative nothing about palms, do no maintenance and yet have better looking plants than you or do things like cut the crown off a Banga and expect it to branch................ ) Now…

I'll bet you don't see this everyday! These are fairly fast-growing palms in cultivation, but a specimen like this is rare, indeed (outside of habitat, that is). Anyone else have any large specimens? Jody
