Hi all, I was cleaning my kentia and I managed to snap the very tip of it off 🫠. I’m so upset. I know this won’t keep it from growing, but will this impact the new fronds profile?

Purchased 100 chameadorea elegans seedlings
by happypalms- 4 replies

An easy chameadorea to grow 100 seedlings was $25 Australian dollars the wife wanted them apparently she is going into the palm growing business and is going to put me out of business according to her theory she will be making a million dollars with the fast growing elegans and i certainly hope she does alright most likely will sell more elegans than Joey palms given how slow Joey palms are 🤣

Potting up some satakentia liukiuensis
by happypalms- 7 replies

I purchased 100 satakentia quite strong seedlings to work with coming from a quality supplier of healthy plants the soil mixture I used was a quality perlite pine bark river sand mixture and a sprinkle of animal manure pellets with trace elements on top of the container under the top one inch of the soil line with high grade black compost well rotted down to almost a high quality black soil for any vegetable garden to a ratio of about 5 percent perlite to 60 percent potting mix to 35 percent compost mixture giving a good drainage sufficient for container growing palms so pretty well much a full organic soil mix the container size was 140mm from 100mm tubes the seedlings w…

Potting up some lytocarum weddlianum sprouts
by happypalms- 0 replies

Had a few few spare weddellianum seeds from my trees in the garden I just have to propagate them there just to good of a palm to not germinate them being a slow growing palm a spare 300 in tubes will grow through to nice specimens in containers in the future an easy palm to germinate coco coir perlite mix in styrofoam box in the hothouse over summer I have used bottom heating before but found no need to us use bottom heating if germinating them over summer a deep container for germinating is one little trick to consider for better root development and if you break a root they pretty well much die

Geonoma atrovirens

My little geonoma is looking good it has survived two winters in the hothouse but somehow I don’t think it will survive in the garden in a cold wet winter so it shall live in a container for a few more years it sits permanently in a shallow tray of water getting to drink as much as it wants in summer for winter it shall be removed from the tray of water so it doesn’t get cold roots iam confident the bigger it gets the more it will withstand the cold weather fingers crossed it is such a lovely palm I fear losing to cold weather

Suggestion for a Palm
by Borosbobo- 4 replies
Hey! We planted a Phoenix Sylvestris next to our 6 Trachy palms. We think that the middle 3 Trachy does not look good. Next to a thicker trunked Sylvestris. Plus the leaves of the Sylvestris will grow on top of the tracycarpuses. So this is why I would like to ask for a suggestion from you guys. We are looking for a palm that can live in Zone 7 meaning that it can survive -5C° (20F°) and it grows big (above 2-3 meters). -We were thinking about a Livistonia but that wouldn’t be good because it’s a pretty windy place and it’s leaves would get ripped easily. -We don’t want a Butia there -In my opinion a cleaned trunked Washingtonia Filifera would lo…

yellowing wedding palms help
by sydneypalms- 2 replies

many of my wedding palms of various ages are yellowing. i dont water them often as they dont like it here, if in pots. ive fed them, leaf sprayed them with iron and trace and fertilizer. nothing seems to work. i have weddings growing in harsh shaded road exposed winter winds, looking fine, but the ones in pots which i bought healthy from 1 person a yr ago are yellowing. he had them in a light shade cloth greenhouse which had alot of sun light, mine are in well lit shade, or mostly shade with some sun, much milder than their last owner, yet are yellowing. and i cant seem to stop it. ive grown heaps of these before and sold a few, but ive never had this issue where its g…

Dypsis rosea
by realarch- 10 replies
Finally got around to giving this trio of Dypsis rosea some TLC. After trimming off some old leaf sheaths and fronds, they are looking rather epic. On island, we always referred to this palm as ‘Hawaiian Punch’, for obvious reasons. The smaller of the three needed more trimming and doesn’t have much color. These are not small palms. The white 5 gal. bucket for some scale in the one photo is between the two trunks. Tim

Borassus flabellifer in Australia?
by maybeamacy- 19 replies
Hi everyone! I'm new to the palm world but I've been trying to find out if the Borassus flabellifer grew in Australia and to my surprise, there seems to be a few specimens up north. Would anyone know where I could source some seeds of this plant in Brisbane or do you think the botanical gardens in Darwin or somewhere could possibly ship some down for me if I paid them? Thanks in advance

Strategus Aloeus: Tis the season for the ox beetle. 1 2

Well I am prepared for my annual battle with the dreaded killer of small palms, Strategus Aloeus, the ox beetle. If you have seen little perfectly round burrows about the size of a quarter within 12 inches of a palm less than 36 inches high, and then the palm died, this was done by Strategus. Last year I tried Spectracide (Triazicide) as prophylaxis against attacks. The results were multiple burrows on 5 palms out of about 60 palms. 3 of the attacked palms were protected by a rock barrier I installed when planting them (see some of my earlier post regarding this). None of those burrows were successful for the beetle. I was able to catch one in the act and kill him. …

My Garden - Melbourne Australia 1 2

Well it’s now been 4 years since I’ve planted out my new garden. Many palms are now photo-worthy, so I thought it is time to create a topic to document the growth. Firstly, a bit of an introduction to Melbourne’s climate: We have an odd temperate climate full of contradictions; we have the least sunshine hours of any Australian capital city, yet our summer sun can be brutal on a hot day. We have the highest recorded temperature 46.4C/115.5F (even hotter at my location nearly 20km south east of the city centre) of any Australian capital yet also the lowest (-2.8C/27F). Just a few of kms down the road from me (a couple of miles) is where the lowest temperature eve…
