It has been many years since our current terms of service were updated. Yes, I am referring to that fine print most of us decline to read. The good news is there is exactly one additional sentence and it is just intended to streamline the registration procedures and membership management for our free level IPS membership. Here it is: Registration on PalmTalk.org without an existing membership in our society will constitute joining our society at a free membership level with associated benefits. In appreciation for your attention I will share a palm photo from my farm. Pigafetta , AKA the Black Wanga Palm

Sowing some chamearops humillis seeds
by happypalms- 0 replies

I purchased one hundred humillis seeds one of the questions I get asked is what have you got that will take frost so it’s optimal for me to grow something that is cold hardy and the humillis fits into that market you cannot just grow what you only desire in the tropical exotics not everyone has those growing conditions for exotics while they still enjoy palms it seems only fair to supply such a market and there relatively slow growing so they won’t brake the growing budget giving a good return in the years to come hopefully 🤞

What's wrong with my Pindo palm? :(
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, My Pindo Palm is dying or already dead. It spent the whole winter in my "palm room" with additional powerful artificial lightning and a humidifier during the driest months, and it had been doing fine, but about a month ago I noticed it started to look worse, kinda drier maybe, and it started to drink less water. All my pots have good palm soil and good drainage, and I also test the soil for moisture level to decide whether I need to water the plant and how much to water it. We went on vacation for a couple of weeks, I watered all the plants on the day of our departure and then on the day of our arrival, and I was shocked to see how bad the …

Cathedral City, CA coconut palm

I thought I would share this coconut palm I planted at my house in the low desert near Palm Springs. I bought this coconut tree online in February 2021 and left it outside in a 15 gal pot until December 2021. Then I brought it inside and kept it in the house for about 4 months, using an indoor grow light to help it get enough light during winter. I planted it outside in March 2022. I used drip irrigation from March - October, then closed off the drippers and have only been watering as needed since then. It grew like crazy until October. Now the top of the most upright frond reaches about 7 feet in height! Without a d…

proper spacing for Bismarkia ?
by Darold Petty- 7 replies
A local friend has a very large yard on a hillside, and wishes to install two Bismarkia palms down the hillside from his deck. What is the proper spacing so that the mature crowns will be close, but not overlap ?? Palmpedia suggests that the crown is 14 to 16 feet in diameter, so that would indicate perhaps 20 feet on center ? Thanks !

New member, but have been getting some good info from everyone on this site for a while. Started getting some palms a few years back and got inspired to start a bigger garden. In DeBary FL, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Progress so far: 2 B. Alfredii, one on the left planted from a 15g in June 2022, other went in this week from a 25g. Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana planted from a 7g in November 2021. Side yard has a couple of flamethrowers, Chambeyronia Oliviformis, another king palm, Lanonia Dasyantha, Caryota Obtusa, Chamaedorea Radicalis x Cataractarum (most likely) and Chamaedorea Microspadix. Plenty of other tropicals mixed in, big fan of Plumerias.…

The Mystery “Brown Palm”
by knell- 1 follower

full disclosure: this is a wacky ID request and long story When I left for Hawaii back in 2017, my friends and relatives inherited my California palm collection, which was full of… rather ambitious species for California, mixed in with practical things like Jubaea and Howea. My parents got the bulk of it with all the leftover bags of seeds and anything my friends didn’t want, which they weren’t too thrilled about and did not seem to give much care or attention to (understandable). So, most of the seedlings perished. There was one notable exception, a palm that my non-plant-person father chose to take care of because it was an unusual shade of… brown. …

bird nest inside a palm

Saw a bird nesting inside a palm near my house. What is the size of the hole inside the palm to make this nest? Do you think the bird could hollow out a healthy palm or the palm may have been significantly weakened to invite the birds?

Coconut rhinoceros beetle

I have two royals that have been in the ground around 22 years. I treated the first today for Coconut rhinoceros beetle prevention (I hope). with Imicide capsules containing 3 mg each. Hope I drilled deep enough for the liquid to get absorbed and taken up to the crown. Will probably do the next tomorrow as I'm fighting a hernia and bending over hurts. The cost for 24 capsules was $175.95 plus tax. I have 7 pritchardias which will also need treatment. At this price I sure hope I save these. There are at least 16 more large palms, 22 year old palms but so far I don't see damage The one on the right is a Roystonea regia and the one on the left is Roystonea olerac…

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transition, but I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, it was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I moved, as I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

tallest Serenoa repens I have ever seen-15ft

I came across the tallest Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) I have ever seen last Saturday. It is growing south of New Smyrna Beach in the Canaveral National Seashore. It is easy to find. Go down A1A into the CNS and then make a right onto Eldora Rd. (River Rd.). It is at the north end of parking lot 7. This is the parking lot before the Eldora ghost town. The main stem is about 15-16ft tall and is growing into a Sand Live Oak (Quercus geminata).

South Florida hobby nursery

Hi all, just purchased 15 acres in South Florida, zone 11a - the property has a crop of field grown Sylvester Palms ready for market. Previous owners have been selling them (uncertified) for a while, but there are about 150 nice ones left that are 4-8' clear trunk. We do have irrigation throughout, so these are nice trees and within a week of moving in a few folks started poking around about buying the rest of the crop. I try to do things by the book, so got our state inspection/certification and am ready to sell. I have a guy who will buy the lot for $50 per foot of clear trunk, which seems low avg for wholesale but he will do all the work. This will provide a nic…

My Floribunda order is on the way! Three boxes😳, coming tomorrow night. They will get a couple weeks worth of summer heat before it starts to cool to more typical temps they knew before. I have read plants remember heat stress for the future when it occurs again, so I'm hoping they get a taste and are ready in spring. I will be documenting their arrival and performance over time here while I prepare them for planting. Most are in pots already, but a few will be potted into a basic cactus and citrus mix while they adjust and I learn their quirks. I will show the successes and failures as well as what I think happened. Chime in if you have thoughts or questions and all …

Palms of Coastal Georgia

Some palmy photos that I have taken within the past few months in coastal Georiga. Tybee Island, GA Tybee Island seems to be the northernmost location in the Eastern U.S where queen palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana) are common. I have seen a few queens in Hilton Head Island but never as much as I see on Tybee Island. I don't think the climate varies that much between Hilton Head and Tybee since they technically are only divided by the Savannah River. IMO, some of the nicest CIDPs that I have ever seen in the South are in Georiga. Washingtonia is another common palm on Tybee Island. A few of these palms have na…
